Most legal services are paid for with retainers, where you, the client, give your lawyer a large sum of money to be held in Trust. Your lawyer bills your retainer his/her hourly rate every time work is performed on your case, including brief e-mails and phone calls. When your retainer dwindles, you are required to feed your retainer with more money.

If you are paying your attorney via retainer, ask how much the TOTAL of your case (not just the opening retainer) will cost and you will hear "it depends."

A flat-fee rate provides you transparency and financial security, because, from the beginning of the case, you know what your case will cost regardless of the amount of time your lawyer spends on your case.
